Reflecting on Our Primary School Community of Practices (COP)
This month has been marked by a series of Primary School Community of Practice (COP) gatherings, spanning across Ivory Park, Braamfisherville, and Eldorado Park. In these sessions, educators, principals, and our esteemed guest, Mr. Bruce Mohammed, came together for purposeful discussions, brainstorming sessions, and collaborative problem-solving. Together, we tackled pressing issues, devised innovative solutions, and outlined a path for collective action.
A standout moment from the Braamfisherville COP was our thorough exploration of best practices for such engagements and the crucial emphasis on safety in these environments. Participants fervently discussed the necessity of implementing an open-door policy and establishing safe spaces.
Throughout all COPs, parental involvement emerged as a consistent and vital topic. In Eldorado Park, we addressed challenges such as student goal orientation, gang activity, substance abuse, and child-headed households. Our proposed solution highlighted the significance of promoting goal-setting among students with robust parental support.
"It's not about where a learner comes from, but rather the direction in which they are headed."

Additionally, we delved into the concept of 'teacherpreneurs' with Mr. Mohammed, exploring how educators can effectively teach and leave a lasting impact on students' lives. Furthermore, we introduced self-help groups to educators, which garnered enthusiastic responses.
Self-help groups serve as small, collaborative communities within the education sector, providing a platform for educators to exchange ideas, resources, and best practices. These groups facilitate professional growth, promote collaboration, and ultimately contribute to improved student outcomes.
As our COPs concluded, we were reminded of our collective commitment to fostering collaboration, continuous improvement, and impactful action. We closed with our Khulani Schools Project impact video, feeling inspired and motivated to continue our journey of growth and transformation.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for their insightful contributions. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our schools and communities.
Celebrating 30 years of Freedom: Reflecting on South Africa's Journey
On the 27th of April, South Africa commemorated Freedom Day, a significant milestone in the nation's history. This day marks the anniversary of the first post-apartheid elections held in 1994, symbolizing the triumph of democracy and the hard-fought freedom of all citizens. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the struggle against apartheid and the journey towards liberation.
Freedom Day is a time for reflection, celebration, and unity as South Africans from all walks of life come together to honour the progress made since the dawn of democracy. It is a day to recognise the resilience and determination of the South African people in overcoming adversity and building a more inclusive society.
As the nation reflects on its past, it also looks towards the future with hope and optimism. Freedom Day is a reminder of the ongoing commitment to democracy, equality, and justice for all. It is a time to reaffirm the values of freedom, diversity, and unity that define the South African identity.
On this auspicious day, let us celebrate the freedoms we enjoy and recommit ourselves to the ongoing journey of nation-building and reconciliation. Happy Freedom Day, South Africa!
“As we remember our national heroes today, let us renew our pledge to always uphold our national unity so that we can live together in peace and harmony.”
